Welocome to Sindhudurg!

Sindhudurg (सिंधुदूर्ग in Marathi) is an administrative district in the state of Maharashtra in India, which was carved out of the erstwhile Ratnagiri district. The district headquarters are located at Oros (ओरोस). The district occupies an area of 5207 km² and has a population of 868,825 of which 9.47% were urban (as of 2001).

The Land of Culture and Natural beauty. Sindhudurg is famous for it's natural beauty like Beaches, Backwater, Waterfalls and Pilgrimage centers. The major attraction here is the long and narrow stretch of beaches. On a clear day, you can see the sea-bed through a depth of 20 ft. Then of course, there are the forts, Sindhudurg one of Maharashtra's more popular and important sea forts built in the 17th century and the famous Padmagarh fort. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit through out the year to see this Maratha glory.

Sindhudurg Fort

Constructed by Shivaji in 1664, at a site personally selected by him. The construction of a sea fort is a stupendous task, and at Sindhudurg no efforts were spared. Over 2000 khandis (4000 mounds) of iron were used for casting and the foundation stones were laid down firmly in lead.

Even today, as one approaches the fort past a rocky reef, navigable through a narrow channel, one marvels at the transportation of such heavy material through such choppy waters. Within its precincts are temples holding the shrines of Maruti, Bhavani, Mahadeo, Jarimai, Mahapurush and also of Shivaji -- the only such shrine in the country.

Parshuram Temple - Aajgaon, Sawantwadi

Konkan is also known as Land of Loard Parshuram. One temple of Loard Parshuram is situated at Sindhudurg district (in Sawantwadi Taluka) in Ajgaon village and the other temple is at Chipalun in Ratnagiri district. Unfortunately; Loard Parshuram who created this land; his temple is totally neglected in Sindhudurg district and is not quite well known also.

Ahilyabai Holakar built this temple which was rebuilt in 2001. Temple built with a magnificent surroundings is equally beautiful and massive. It has huge meeting room, independent Gabhara (the most inner place of a temple where god’s idol is situated), independent Pradakshina Marg (walkway), Palkhi Marg (procession way). It has a colossal DeepStambh (decorative column that holds oil lamps) in front of the temple and inside stunning idol of Lord Parshuram made out of Black stone.

Bhargavram or Parshuram are known as Lord Vishu’s avatar (incarnation). Parshuram is considered as 6th avatar of Dashavatar (Ten avatars). He is considered to be chiranjeev (eternal). He was born in Bhargav Rushi Kul ( ---- ) and hence he is also known as Bhrgavram. He made 21 trips round the world by walking over with Parshu (axe) which was given to him by Lord Ganesh and killed kings who used to threaten and trouble their own people making world Ni-Kshatriya (Kshatriya less - The Kshatriya are one of the four varnas of Hinduism, the other three being Brahmins, Vaishyas and Shudras. They are the warrior and ruling caste in the varna system.). Lord Parshuram was Guru (teacher) to Bhishma and Dronacharya’s who are considered as brave and knoledgable persons of Mahabharat. But he was never interested in ruling and he donated all that land he won to Saint Kashyap. But he never wanted to leave on the land that he donated to Saint Kshyapa and he would not have taken it back also since it was against religion. So he requested Sea to give him a piece of land between Kashyap’s land and the arrow that he would hit in the sea. Sea considered his request and as soon as he hit the arrow Sea went back and that’s how Konkan was created. That’s why this land is also known as IshuPaat kshetra (Ishu= Arrow, Paat= fell, kshetra= area).

On 12th March 1942 when Saint Gajanan Maharaj was praying Lord Parshuram emerged and offered Diksha (Diksha primarily means a transfer of spiritual knowledge by guru) of Tripura mantra to him. It is said that “Konkan” name comes form Lord Parshiuram’s mother name “Renuka” OR “Kunkana”.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar is 15 kms away from Devagad. Kunkeshwar is also know as Konkan’s Kashi (religious capital of India – Varansi). This temple was built in around B.C. 1100. Apart from Shivling (a symbol for the worship of the Hindu god Shiva) the temple also has idol of godess Parvati (Lord Shiva’s wife). It also has many temples of other hindu gods and godesses. In year 1920 few caves were explored on the east side of temple on the mountain which have few idols and statues carved in it.

It is belived that this temple is build by a Muslim (Arab businessman). The story goes like he was traveling by boat and all of sudden his boat got caught in a storm and it sank. He thought that it’s end of his life when he saw a some light on the shore. He prayed to the god and said if I am saved out of this storm then I will build a temple at this place. After some time storm stopped and he reached the shore along with his boat. He then thanked god and as promised built a temple on the same piece of land. But he had a fear that his own people wouldn’t accept him back; he jumped off from the top of the temple. His memorial still exists inside the temple campus.

The deep blue waters of the sea add to the beauty of this magnificent temple. The beach is very clean. White sandy beach is surrounded by lush green trees and mountains. The place is filled with combination of philosophical and natural beauty and is always crowded with tourists.

Sindhudurg Fort

Just 1 k.m. away from Malvan city; this fort is considered as a soul of Hindavi Swarajya (Hindu empire set up by Shri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj). If we have to fight with British and Portuguese then we ought to have complete control over sea was realized by King Shivaji and hence he decided to build a fort. When he visited Kurte island he was convinced there’s no other place like this to build a fort. Today after seeing this fort on this island one must feel like offering a salute to this visionary king. On 25th November 1664 after offering prayers to sea god the first stone of the fort was laid. The construction work got over by 29th March 1667.

Fort set up over 48 acres of land of is a unique and one of it’s kind example architectural design. The approach to this fort is through ferry boats available at Malavan jetty. Fort wall is built in such a fashion that on first look it’s very difficult to find the main entrance gate. The idea was to hide the main door from enemies to protect it from direct fire from a long distance.

Inside the fort one can visit Jarimari Temple, Bhavani Temple, Mahadev Temple and Dudhbav, Dahibav and Sakharbav which are sweet water wells on the island. Inside Mahadev temple is a well which has secret tunnel. Wonder of the nature, a coconut tree with two branches is also very popular amongst the visitors. In one corner of the fort wall are the handprints of King Shivaji embossed in lime. Shivaji maharaj’s only temple in Maharashtra state “Shivrajeshwar” is also a part of this fort. King Shivaji’s statue without beard inside this temple is in a Navadi’s (sailor’s) get up. Rajaram Maharaj in year 1695 got this statue built in this temple.

The remains of the wrecked meeting room is a must see. The amazing sea view that one can see from here is just awesome. This fort is built 2 k.m. inside the sea and can be visited throughout the year except for rainy season (June – August).
